Summertime = Road Trips! Fortunately my husband had 5 days off over the 4th of July weekend so we headed to the Eastern Sierra Mountains for two nights of camping and another two nights in a comfortable hotel in Mammoth Lakes. With all the driving we did, our 11yr old SUV hit 200,000 miles. In the past, our road trip snacks consisted of guzzling down overly-sweetened bottled iced teas while overindulging on salt and vinegar chips. What is it about driving (in my case riding shotgun) that makes you want to eat all sorts of junk food? Is it the idea that you’re on vacation so your smart food choices also takes a vacation? Nevertheless, I knew that needed to change. So to satisfy my snack cravings during our drive, I packed a combination of something savory and sweet.
- Nuts – Pistachios were on sale a couple of weeks ago at our local Sprout’s grocery store. I always cringe at the price because they’re so expensive but I had to take advantage of the sale. This is one nut that takes a little bit of work before you can eat it, but it’s worthwhile. As far as their nutritional value, they pack a punch as shown on the image below. In addition to pistachios, I also packed a small bag of mixed raw nuts (cashews, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts). Target (Archer Farms brand) sells them in a big 30oz container and with the 5% off from Cartwheel + 5% off from the Target Redcard, it was another excellent buy. Talk about bargain shopping for nuts!
- Fruit – Fresh cherries are in season and my daughters love them! Their favorite part is picking them up by the stem and eating around the pit. Well, my 2 yr old would bite off a little piece then would ask me to take the pit out (Imagine having to do this several times in the car – FUN!…). Cherries have plenty of health benefits, rich with antioxidants. According to Dr. Mercola, “Sweet cherries also contain a small amount of quercetin, which is among the most potent in terms of antioxidant activity and a wide range of other health-promoting properties.” A cup of cherries has 90 calories and contains fiber, protein, as well as Vitamins A and C. The girls love fruit so in addition to cherries, I also packed blueberries, strawberries, plums, and apples. Enough for the road as well as our camping trip!
- Kind Bars – Dark Chocolate Mocha Almond – this was a satisfying treat, a combination of dark roast coffee and almonds with dark chocolate and only 5g of sugar. I was SOLD! It did take me awhile to find these ones as I scoured through a wall of bars in our Target store. The packaging with the label ‘Only 5g Sugar’ definitely helped in refining my selection.
- Coffee – when we’re on the road, coffee is the key to survival. Well, maybe not in my case since I let my husband do all the driving. But I always need a little pick-me-up in the middle of the day. We picked up an awesome souvenir cup from one of the coffee shops we tried in Bishop called the Looney Bean (catchy name!) They’re also located in Mammoth Lakes, Bend, Montrose and Mazatlan. Drinking coffee in a brand new funky looking mug makes it even taste better, do you agree?
- Plenty of Water – Drinking enough water while in the mountains is so important and you definitely want to arrive properly hydrated. At higher altitudes, our breathing rate increases therefore through respiration, more water is lost and need to be replenished. I woke up a couple of times with a slight headache, one of the symptoms of dehydration and had to remind myself throughout the day to drink more.
