摘要

Professional advancement often comes through personal connections. In this paper, we study how gender shapes the career benefts workers enjoy from positive shocks to their network of connections. We follow mid-career scientists in China who compete to serve on a major scientific funding body, a role which brings substantial opportunities to expand one's personal network – such as through regular interactions with influential senior scientists. We estimate how this service affects career advancement and how these impacts differ by gender. After service, males win 56 percent more high-stakes, high-value grants, and they are more than twice as likely to be promoted to senior roles. Their service also helps colleagues at their home institution win more grants from the funding body. In contrast, females enjoy no such gains on any of these outcomes. Exploring mechanisms, we find that these effects appear to flow primarily through an expansion to the professional networks of male and not female scientists. We find that the benefits of service are more equal by gender when there are more opportunities for mid-career female scientists to network with senior female scientists. Our findings help explain the persistence of gender inequality in senior roles in science and beyond, and illustrate a key mechanism through which historical group-based advantage can persist.

胡枫,北京科技大学经管学院教授。研究领域包括劳动经济学、教育经济学、和科学经济学。于1999年从南开大学化学学院获得学士学位,于2007年从北京大学光华管理学院获得博士学位,曾作为访问学者在布朗大学经济学系和哥伦比亚大学教育学院进行研究。研究成果发表在领先的科学和经济学期刊,如Nature Human BehaviourReview of Economics and StatisticsJournal of Comparative EconomicsEconomics of Education Review等。
